LOS ROQUES After a short flight from Maiquetía or Porlamar are lands in the Gran Roque, to reach the archipelago our staff welcomes you and a briefing to our customers. Immediately embarks on one of our sailing catamarans for a tour of the spectacular archipelago. During the visit a day or two keys around the Gran Roque and will enjoy a fabulous beach of white sand and crystal clear waters. The Los Roques Archipelago has an area of 221,120 hectares and consists of more than 300 islets, cays and sandbars, along with countless reef, forming a ring along a central lagoon of shallow water, occupied by mangroves and coral formations. The formation of the archipelago is due to coral growth on a rocky underwater plateau that began after the last glaciation. The island of Gran Roque is the only afloración of this plateau and there is established the permanent population of the archipelago since 1910. The inhabitants of Los Roques, about 1,500 are engaged in fishing of lobsters, snails and fish from our own tropical waters. They are beginning to work in public service activities and increasingly with the emerging tourism starts to visit the area. Los Roques has been visited since the time of the pre and Caribbeans Indians after the discovery by Spaniards, Dutch, English and French, who came to this area in search of protection when there were storms at sea, fishing or removing salt.
